To the Men Who Make Us Feel Inspiration and Loved
My dad was a very, very good man.
I know a lot of people say this about their father - but my dad, he was really something great.
My dad never got a formal education, but his intense desire to learn made him creative and cunning. Dad taught himself how to read by intently studying newspapers and books he found around his house when he was a child. He peered through the windows of classrooms, trying desperately to grasp the material on the chalkboard from his hidden spot outside. Nothing stopped my dad from learning and growing. Dad taught himself Teochew Chinese, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese.
When my mom passed away in 1986, Dad jumped in with both feet to be housekeeper, teacher, mother, father, and the hardest worker I’ve ever known.
Our family owned a dried goods store. My dad worked himself to the bone, carrying huge bags of dried food to be delivered in our community. But I never heard my dad complain.
In fact, he gave us the best of him at all times. He always put us kids first (10 of us in total!), bringing home delicious dishes or sharing a durian. I think fondly of times sharing durians with my dad even as an adult.
He brought us to the US to build a relationship with his grandchildren later on in life and lived out the rest of his life surrounded by love and family, as he always wanted.
He had the biggest, most generous heart - endlessly giving without asking in return. He wasn’t one for sharing sentiments or mushy words, instead to show his love through actions, warm meals, and tropical foods to his family.
Thank you for allowing me to honor my dad by writing about him. I miss him every day, and it warms my heart to be able to share a tiny snippet of his beautiful life story with you.
I love you always, Dad. Happy Father’s Day.
And to you - I hope that you are warmed by memories of your own father on this special day, whether he’s with you closed by/far distance or in spirit.
