So, what exactly causes our skin to act up?

Yes, diets play an important role in how the skin responds. Dairy, sugar, and gluten are some of the things that need to be minimized or removed from the diet. But overall, the main contributing factors to acne are fast cells turnover, fast oil flows, and abnormal cell division, stress, hormonal issues, and medication.

We immediately tend to think that junk food is the root of all problems, and while there is a correlation between acne and the consumption of fatty or sugary products, causation can be difficult to prove.

But, according to a few studies, there are certain foods that are more likely to cause a bad case of acne, and today, we are going to see exactly how your diet affects your skin. 

Can Your Diet Actually Affect Your Skin?

Some of us have heard that food plays a big role in having acne-free skin, while others have heard the opposite. But what exactly is the truth?

The skin is the largest organ in our body, and just like any organ, it is influenced by the nutrients we consume. These nutrients are provided by the food we eat. Once food has entered the digestive system, it is broken down into glucose, vitamins, amino acids, fatty acids, and minerals. 

All these nutrients are essential to our health, so if your diet is lacking, then your body, and ultimately your skin, will take the hit. 

But acne is not the only skin condition influenced by your diet. Food can also impact blemishes, wrinkles, and moisture levels in your skin.

What Foods Should You Avoid?

A recent study not only solidifies the correlation between our dietary choices and the apparition of acne but may also give us clues about the types of foods we should stay away from. 

The study was performed on 24,452 participants, all of which were categorized in one of three acne-related categories:

  • Never had acne

  • Had acne in the past

  • Currently has acne

The conclusion of this study is that certain categories of food products appear to be associated with current cases of acne. Here are some of those products:

Dairy 

Dairy has been linked to acne in several studies, but the precise reason why it causes breakouts is still not fully clear. A hypothesis blames the high carbohydrate content, which increases the levels of blood sugar, which in turn leads to a spike in insulin. This spike leads to higher oil production. 

If you believe that dairy products are causing your acne, try replacing animal milk with other alternatives on the market, like soy milk or almond milk. Also, make sure that you maintain a proper intake of calcium by eating soy, spinach, and other foods high in calcium. 

Sugar 

Not only is sugar bad for acne, but it also speeds up the aging process of your skin. Once in your body, the sugars bind to the elastic proteins and collagen in your skin, causing them to stiffen. This process is called glycation and it makes your skin less elastic, making it prone to sagging and wrinkles.

There are a lot of products that contain refined sugars, so the best way to avoid sugar is to look for foods with whole-grain carbohydrates. 

Salty Foods

Salty foods, such as French fries and chips, are without a doubt delicious, but they are not that great for your skin. High intakes of salt facilitate water retention, which can make you feel and look bloated. 

Also, very high quantities of iodized salt increase the likelihood of having breakouts, which is why you should always check the labels of the food you are purchasing.

Some other foods that should be consumed in reduced quantities are carbohydrates, red meat, and foods rich in Omega-6 fats. 

Foods That You Should Eat

It comes as no surprise that the first foods on this list are fruits and vegetables. For example, yellow, red, and green (leafy) vegetables are a fantastic source of vitamin A, which is an important component of the skin cell renewal process. 

For acne, skin cells turn over too fast vitamin A, which will regulate the skin cell renewal process. For aging skin, skin cells turn over too slow with topical vitamin A and the food you eat will help the skin cell renewal process.

Vegetables rich in vitamin C (broccoli, citrus fruits, potatoes, peppers, etc...) are essential in the production of collagen. Vitamin C also works as an antioxidant that has an active role in protecting your skin from the effects of UV rays. Also, vitamin C prevents post inflammation, pigmentation, and scars.

Besides fruit and vegetables, you should also include fish in your diet, as it is an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which have an anti-inflammatory role. These fatty acids are fantastic for people who have drier skin or have flaky skin. 

Two other great additions are nuts and seeds, both of which are great sources of Vitamin E. This vitamin promotes the healing of skin cells and has a role in protecting the cells’ membrane. They also are full of minerals like zinc and selenium. 

Although you should be careful with what you eat, you should also pay attention to your skincare products and skincare routine.

So no matter what your skincare routine looks like in the end, it’s quite likely that it includes skin cleansing. But why do we cleanse our skin? And how do we know if the products we’re using are the right ones for us?

Skin Cleansing Benefits

You’d think that cleansing is just a method to clean the skin before applying the rest of your products. While that is the main role of a cleanser, it has other benefits as well, especially when there is such a wide variety of cleansers available on the market. 

Depending on the ingredients and type, cleansers have the following benefits: 

  • Remove dirt, impurities, and makeup — having a cleanser is essential, especially if you have the habit of wearing makeup every day. But it’s not just makeup that you want to get rid of. It’s also the dirt particles that hang on to your skin during the day, as well as dead skin cells, excess sebum, and pollutants.

  • Boost skin hydration — after removing the barrier of impurities, your skin will be able to absorb the moisturizer you apply afterward much easier. In fact, all products that follow a good cleansing routine will be absorbed faster and easier.

  • Exfoliate the skin — some cleansers have been combined with scrubs in order to exfoliate and cleanse your skin at the same time. These cleansers will have micro particles that facilitate exfoliation. Some other cleansers have been combined with chemical exfoliants, such as salicylic acid and glycolic acid in order to clean the skin better.

  • Help maintain clear skin — blackheads, whiteheads, and occasionally pimples can appear if the skin is not properly cleaned. Pores and hair follicles can easily get clogged with dirt and sebum, therefore creating blackheads and whiteheads. But a good cleanser can prevent the buildup and make sure your pores stay clean.

  • Balance skin pH — not only that but cleansing allows the skin to be oxygenated properly, which aids the regeneration process of the skin. With the proper cleansers, your skin will look younger and small imperfections such as wrinkles, acne scarring, or rosacea will become less visible.

When Should You Cleanse Your Skin? 

When it comes to cleansing your skin, you should strive for balance. If you don’t cleanse enough times, then the dirt will accumulate in your pores and you will have acne breakouts and other skin issues. 

But cleansing your skin too often is also a big nono. Overcleaning can bring forth dryness, irritations, and tight and dull skin, which is not something anybody is looking for. 

The common practice though is to cleanse the skin twice — once in the morning and once before bed. 

Double cleansing is a common practice that is performed at the end of the day when makeup is removed from the face. This ensures that there are no traces of makeup left on the skin. 

What Cleanser Should You Use? 

You should always look for cleansers that fit your skin condition. For example, if you have dry skin, then you should choose a more gentle cleanser that will not strip the skin completely of its natural oils. 

But if you have oily skin then you can go ahead with a cleanser that cleans the skin more thoroughly. 

If you don’t know what cleanser you should use, then you should take a look at the following selection: 

  • Arnica Cleanser — appropriate for all skin types, this cleanser will smoothen and revitalize your skin in no time.

  • Pumpkin Cleanser — appropriate for dry to normal, combination, and photo-aged skin, this cleanser provides important nutrition for the skin.

Foods to Avoid This Holiday Season

One of the best parts of the holiday season is all of the delicious food there is to eat. Although we don’t want you to deprive yourself of your favorites, it does pay to eat smart. After all, the food we eat is directly connected, not just to what size pants we’ll be wearing, but to our skin. So although you might be able to rationalize that slice of pie in exchange for a new gym membership in January, that pie can also mean a breakout of blemishes for the annual family Christmas photo. And that photo could be framed on the mantel for many years to come, so it’s best to know when to splurge and when to decline.

And that photo could be framed on the mantel for many years to come, so it’s best to know when to splurge and when to decline.

By far, the worst holiday splurge of all is Egg Nog. This creamy cup of deliciousness can spell disaster for your skin AND waistline. Sugar, milk and fat are a recipe for disaster when it comes to the skin. They increase oil production and therefore make your skin a perfect habitat for bacteria. If you must have your egg nog to truly feel in the holiday spirit, have a very small portion and keep the alcohol out of it.

Which brings us to a second holiday no-no. Alcohol. I know it’s difficult to deal with old Uncle Ernie without a drink your hand, but if possible, go easy on these tasty beverages. Alcohol is very dehydrating, and your body will respond by taking much needed water away from the skin, so you’ll likely end up with a dry and flaky complexion. It’s not the best look. If you must indulge, try going with clear spirits like vodka paired with a non-sugary mixer like soda water. Add a squeeze of lemon or lime for flavor.

Creamy Dips are dangerous. Don’t let the carrot you’re dipping into it fool you. These dips are generally bowls of mayo, cream cheese or sour cream. They can spell disaster for the skin. Instead set your radar on the shrimp cocktail and cocktail sauce or baked tortilla chips and salsa. These are much better options.

Beware of Casseroles and Creamed Vegetables. Yes, we understand that they are vegetables and potentially have a lot a great nutrients in them, but the term casserole or creamed should serve as a warning. Usually that means tons of cream, butter and salt, none of which are good for your skin. Get your dose of vegetables at the appetizer tray. Raw carrots, red peppers, broccoli and celery dipped in hummus is a better place to stock up on vegetables than those enveloped in lots of cream.

Potatoes are another tricky one. Like vegetables, make sure they are not stuffed with tons of cheese, bacon and sour cream. Stuffed potatoes can quickly go from healthy to not based on the toppings alone. Likely, there will be some sweet potatoes on the table as well. Stick to the these sweeter cousins as long as they are not overly candied. If they’ve got butter and marshmallow, then they can be just as bad. But a simple sweet potato with some cinnamon on it might be a delicious treat.

And last but not least, stay away from the Pie. It might look innocent enough filled with healthy fruit, but don’t be fooled. The crust is full of sugar, white flour, shortening and butter. And the fruit filling tastes great because it ‘s loaded with sugar. Pie is no friend to the skin. If you must indulge, seek out the pumpkin pie. The filling will have vitamin A and fiber in it, which is great for the skin. And if you can swing, it maybe leave the crust on the plate.
